Shopping for the Things You Need
Every day life requires many things. Obviously, there are places you can find the things that everyone needs without too much trouble. In this regard, the only difference that may exist between the United States and your home country is the layout of the towns and cities, and the goods provided by certain kinds of stores.
To give you an example, some countries have large marketplaces where food, clothing and household products can be bought. You won't find marketplaces in most areas in the U.S. Some towns and cities around the world are arranged so that all the stores are located in one area, which is separated from all the homes. This remains somewhat true in some areas of the U.S., but not all.
Small Towns and Big Towns
In towns that are too small to have a downtown area, stores and shops may be mixed in with houses and rural areas, and also located on any big roads that go through the town. Bigger towns and small cities will usually have a downtown area where stores and shops of all kinds can be found. Downtown areas can often be “tourist areas” which will make them more expensive than stores outside of downtown.
Downtown is where you will find shops and stores that sell desirable items, but not always necessary items. For example, downtown areas will have restaurants, but not always grocery stores. There will probably be fashionable clothing stores, but not clothing outlets featuring more affordable clothing. In big towns and small cities grocery stores and outlet stores will most likely be found (just like in smaller towns) on the main streets.
Cities
Big cities may have districts where certain types of establishments are gathered. For instance a Business District will be the area of the city where there are mostly businesses and company buildings and some restaurants. Shopping Districts are where you will find the same type of stores you would find in the downtown area of a smaller city – clothing, music and movie, book, jewelery, and electronics stores, among others.
Keep in mind that not every city is set up with districts. Some cities have different sections that, basically, all contain the same things. Similarly, some cities are organized while others may be very confusing and seem to have no organization.
Grocery stores are generally available in all sections of the city sometimes located inside shopping centers. Cities are also great places to find specialty food shops because cities have such a great mix of cultures. Finding shops and restaurants that specialize in foods and products from different regions around the world is usually not hard.
Moreover, many cities have sections that are mostly populated by a particular ethnic group. Great examples of this are Little Italy in New York City; Chinatown in Boston; Greektown in Baltimore, Maryland; and Little Saigon in Orange County, California. These are just some of the best-known. Many cities will have sections with high numbers of certain ethnic groups, but no formal title. In areas like this there is almost always great food and stores with unique products.
Different Types of Stores
So what about the things you really need? In smaller towns and cities things like grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations are located most often on the bigger roads in the town or city. Keep in mind that these kinds of stores usually sell more than their names would suggest.
What this means is that you can find more than food at grocery stores, you can also find paper and cleaning products; you can find more than medicine at pharmacies, you will also see hygeine products and household items; even gas stations usually sell snacks, drinks and cigarettes. In fact, in many states you will find cigarettes and some kinds of alcohol in all of these stores.
Food Shopping
There are not really any alternatives to grocery stores. If you want to go food shopping in one stop, you are basically going to have to a grocery store. The only other options are specialty shops. These are shops that offer one type of product. For instance you can go to a delicatessan (more often called a deli) that specializes in meats, and you can go to a bakery to get breads of different sorts. Department Stores and Outlets
Department stores and outlets are good examples of where you may find items that everybody needs that are not overpriced. These are also called retail stores. Department stores got that name because they are made up of different departments that have different products. For example one department store may have a section for clothes, food, household products such as kitchenware or bathroom items, as well as a section electronics. Bigger stores will have more sections. Some stores also include pharmacies, liquor stores, and yard and garden sections.
Outlet stores can be a little different. Outlets are usually many different stores all connected to the same long building. Each store may sell a different product, but you get the convenience of having those separate stores all in th same place. In many places there are “strips” – sections of larger roads that are lined with stores – that have many outlets. These are usually called outlet malls.
Malls
There are outlet malls, strip malls and just plain-old malls. Depending on where you are in the country they may be called something else. Basically, a mall is a large building – sometimes more than one building – that houses many stores that have all different purposes. Malls may also be called shopping centers. A plaza is another group of stores that are similar to malls, shopping centers and outlets.
Malls – like downtown areas – are good places to go if you are looking for fashionable clothing, jewelery stores, entertainment products, etc. Malls, outlets and plazas are usually going to be more expensive than department stores. However, many malls, shopping centers, plazas and outlet malls have department stores inside them, or as part of them.
